Indonesia to Build Underground LRT in Bali to Ease Traffic Congestion

Indonesia plans to start building an underground light rail transit (LRT) system on the popular resort island of Bali next year to ease roadway congestion from the airport.

The LRT system will connect the island’s international airport to popular tourist areas Canggu and Seminyak. It is expected to be completed by 2025-2026, and will be able to accommodate 24 million visitors annually.

The project has courted investment interest from South Korea, Japan, and China. The government will select the investor who offers the best transfer of technology, speed, and affordability.

The LRT system is part of the government’s efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in Indonesia. A LRT system recently opened in Jakarta, and a Chinese-funded high-speed rail from Jakarta to the Javan city of Bandung will launch next week.

In addition to the LRT system, Bali will also impose a 150,000 rupiah (S$13) tax on tourists next year to fund cultural preservation and protect the island’s tropical allure.

Benefits of the LRT system:

Reduce traffic congestion on Bali’s narrow roads
Provide a faster and more reliable way to travel between the airport and popular tourist areas
Reduce pollution and improve air quality
Boost tourism and economic growth
Create jobs and stimulate the local economy
Environmental concerns:

The construction of the LRT system could damage the island’s environment, especially if it is not done carefully.
The operation of the LRT system could also generate noise and pollution.
Overall, the construction of the LRT system is a positive development for Bali. It will help to improve transportation infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion, and boost tourism. However, it is important to ensure that the project is carried out in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
