Friday Q&A with a Bali resident Amelia

Welcome to Friday Q&A with Amelia, a Bali resident!

Q: How long have you been living in Bali?
A: I have been living in Bali for five years now.

Q: What made you decide to move to Bali?
A: I always had a deep fascination with the Balinese culture and its natural beauty. After visiting as a tourist multiple times, I fell in love with the island’s serene environment, friendly people, and vibrant expatriate community. So, I made the decision to move here and have never looked back since!

Q: What’s your favorite thing about living in Bali?
A: It’s difficult to pick just one, but if I have to choose, I would say the laid-back lifestyle and the breathtaking sunsets. Bali has this unique ability to make you slow down, appreciate the little things in life, and live in the present moment. And the sunsets here are absolutely mesmerizing, painting the sky with vibrant hues every evening.

Q: What are some challenges you’ve faced living in Bali?
A: Like anywhere else, living in Bali has its challenges. One of the main difficulties I’ve encountered is the language barrier. Not everyone speaks English fluently, which sometimes makes it challenging to communicate effectively. Additionally, the heavy traffic and occasional lack of infrastructure can be frustrating at times. But overall, these challenges are minor compared to the beautiful experiences Bali offers.

Q: How has Bali changed over the years?
A: Bali has seen significant development over the years. Tourism has boomed, leading to an increase in infrastructure, hotels, and restaurants. It has become more crowded, especially in popular tourist areas like Seminyak and Ubud. Unfortunately, this growth has also put some strain on the island’s environment, with increased waste and pollution. Nevertheless, Bali continues to maintain its unique charm and spiritual atmosphere.

Q: What is your favorite Balinese dish?
A: Oh, that’s a tough one! Balinese cuisine is incredibly diverse and delicious. However, if I had to choose, I would say “Babi Guling” or suckling pig. It’s a traditional Balinese dish of roasted pig, cooked with a blend of local spices. The flavors are rich and authentic, making it a must-try for any food enthusiast visiting Bali.

Q: Any local tips for someone visiting Bali for the first time?
A: Absolutely! My top tip would be to embrace the local customs and traditions. Balinese people are incredibly kind and open-hearted, and showing respect for their culture will go a long way. Also, don’t miss exploring the less touristy areas of Bali, such as the northern region or the eastern coast. These areas offer a more authentic experience and showcase the island’s beautiful natural landscapes.

Q: Do you plan on living in Bali long-term?
A: As of now, I don’t see myself leaving Bali anytime soon. The island has become my second home, and I feel truly connected to its energy and community. However, life is unpredictable, and I’ve learned to be open to new possibilities. So, while I don’t have specific long-term plans, Bali will always hold a special place in my heart.

That wraps up our Friday Q&A with Amelia, a Bali resident. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you enjoyed learning more about life on this enchanting island!
